The New World provided people from all over the world an opportunity for a new start. Starting with the Mayflower the migration to the New World began. John Howland arrived on the Mayflower in 1620, the pilgrims built the first permanent settlement in the new world. This began the great migration that brought many people to the New World for a variety of reasons. The potato blight in the 1840's brought a large influx of Irish immigrants to the new world. Political and religious oppression in Europe brought another wave of immigrants in the early 1900's. The Great Melting Pot brought people from around the world, to pursue freedom or run from oppression. |
