George W. Howland
(These documents were commonplace during that era -- usually biographies that their subjects paid to have included in the books. This was published while he was still alive, and supposedly authorized the information. I should note that it is not totally accurate, but he should know who his ancestors were. Excerpts pertain to Briggs; full text.)
States that GWH was ... the son of John and Lydia (Hardy).Howland.
Zebulon (Jebland) was the father of a numerous family -- one of his sons, Briggs Howland, being the father of John, and
grandfather of our subject.
Briggs Howland was born in Wiscasset, but for several years in his earlier life had been a sea-faring man. Later he became a farmer, and was engaged in that avocation up to the time of his death, which occurred when he was about 65 years old. "
Briggs went to New York to work on the Erie Canal, and that coincides with the time that John Howland left Maine for New York. The book also has a copy of a letter from Evelyn Howland, Phillips, Maine, to a genealogical researcher, dated Dec. 6, 1921, which says Zebulon Howland came to the area in 1808 and Isaac Howland came in 1809. This writer claimed decendency from John Howland. She also said that Briggs lived in Wilton, Maine. 3
